Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is a slick, breezy and pleasant fare that should click with its target audience -- the youth -- and also has the potential to woo the older spectators as well. This take on love is refined, smart, lively and thoroughly pleasing thanks to its characters, conversations and the inherent humor. A perfect date movie. A film stuffed with exquisite moments that are sure to bring a wide smile on your face. Simply put, you cannot afford to miss Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. Just go for it!
EMAET is neither on the epic side like Dharma Productions' great, grand ancestors nor weighed down by an overload of pop culture references of those that define the genre. Instead the confection's appeal lies in its underplayed wit, quirky within plausibility protagonists and a refreshing disregard for conventional conclusions. Almost like a big studio flick with an indie mindset. Almost.
This picture though, smartly written and filmed (Shakun Batra, fine debut), is mellow yet dramatic, softer, subtler, more ‘plush interiors’ American rom-com. More than occasionally, it lights up your mood, brings a smile to your face. What else should you demand from a genre that usually sets the bar so low: Girl meets boy; one falls in love before the other; they live happily ever after. Is the girl merely being friendly, or leading the boy on, is a conflict more common to less segregated, urban, real lives, like yours or mine. This one captures that vagueness quite well. That’s neat subversion all right: completely worth your while!
'Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu' is a narrative that unfolds mainly through dialogue, and the lighter moments come at you as the odd couple gets to know each other. The humor hits the mark many times and falls flat occasionally, but the movie doesn't grate because the characters aren't trying too hard to be cute At 1 hour and 50 minutes, the film is light and breezy, and mercifully never turns too syrupy for your taste.
Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is a delightful film that keeps getting better along the way, and ends fabulously. Clocking under two hours, the film is a breezy watch that will leave you with a smile. Highly recommended.
This clearly is an Imran Khan show. Sedate and subdued, he goes about bringing Rahul to life. However, the film does tend to get monotonous with the focus being on just the two. Batra tries to rope in a few more characters as the plot moves to India with Riana's parents and her extended family. Here, Batra falters as he portrays her family more like Parsis than Catholics. EMAET had the potential of being an even better film. The three stars are for the excellent treatment and Imran's performance.
EMAET is the sweetest heartbreak that Bollywood has conjured in a long, long time. It works both as a college buddy movie and a date movie; for the young and the not-so-young. You can even watch it alone. And if a gorgeous girl asks you for a drink, go ahead, take a chance. As Rahul will tell you, it will be worth every second of your life.
